Understanding sheep baa-haviour: Investigating the relationship between pasture and animal grazing patterns

Danica Parnell*, Igor Kardailsky, Jacob Parnell, Warwick Brabazon Badgery, Lachlan Ingram

Dynamics between animal behaviour and pasture use can impact overall utilisation, contributing to under- or overgrazing patches. Understanding the behaviour and interactions that sheep have with their environment can provide various insights into drivers of forage selectivity and pasture utilisation and is an important metric in developing long-term sustainable management strategies for grasslands at a paddock scale.

FORAGE, TURF, AND BIOENERGY CROPS

Forage production and persistence characteristics of grazed native warm-season grass mixtures with or without nitrogen fertilizer

Caroline Nicole Chappell, Marty Landon Marks, Katie Michelle Mason, Liliane Severino da Silva, Joshua Luke Jacobs, Mary Kimberly Mullenix, Sandra Leanne Dillard, Russell Brian Muntifering*

Native warm-season grass mixtures fertilized with low rates of N (67 kg N ha−1) increase early-season forage and animal stocking capacity under continuous stocking and provide an alternative, low-N-input forage system in the southeastern United States to improve perennial warm-season species.

Trends of seasonal forage yield changes of triticale in the southern Great Plains of the United States

Tadele T. Kumssa, Joshua D. Anderson, James P. Johnson, Shawn Norton, Malay C. Saha, Michael A. Trammell, James K. Rogers, Twain J. Butler, Xue-Feng Ma*

After decades of triticale breeding for increasing early forage production, significant progress has been made in increasing autumn–winter forage yield, but minor progress in the total yield due to seasonal yield tradeoff between the early and late stages of the growth.

Quantifying golf course nitrogen use efficiency

Michael A. H. Bekken*, Douglas J. Soldat

This study analyzed nitrogen (N) fertilizer applications on golf courses. We found a high degree of variation in N rate across golf courses. This indicates that some golf courses use N efficiently, but that other golf courses are likely overusing N, which can lead to poor environment outcomes, such as eutrophication.

Growth performance of different Epichloë sinensis strains on media with different additives

Pei Tian*, Meining Wang, Yang Luo, Xingdi Wang, Wenbo Xu

Epichloë sinensis isolated from different Festuca sinensis ecotypes had different antioxidant capacities and enzyme activities. In addition, plant growth regulators promoted fungal growth, whereas ions inhibited their growth. This study provides more information about the new species.

Responses to defoliation and fertiliser, corm development and chemical control of onion grass (Romulea rosea) in the Mediterranean environment of southern Australia.

Zhongnan Nie*, Reto Zollinger, Ralph Behrendt

Based on the growth behaviour and corm formation of onion grass (Romulea rosea), practical technology has been developed to effectively control the plant, a most common and challenging weed in pastures of southern Australia, which could significantly improve pasture production and nutritive value and reduce health risks to grazing animals.

The role of herbivores in the grassland carbon budget for Three-Rivers Headwaters region, Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau, China

Junbang Wang, Xinquan Zhao*, Xihuang Ouyang, Liang Zhao, Wenying Wang, Chan Zuo, Zhenhua Zhang, Huakun Zhou, Alan Watson, Yingnian Li

The herbivore carbon budget was estimated by an animal metabolic model developed in the Three-Rivers Headwaters region. The livestock contributed 88% of the total consumed carbon that was returned 44% to grassland as feces and urine, and 40% through respiration and the remaining 4% in wildlife and 13% in livestock.
